Full-Time Director of Institutional Advancement

Job Description

The Director of Institutional Advancement will be responsible for developing, implementing, and executing the fundraising strategy to successfully meet annual goals and advance financial growth.

The Director of Institutional Advancement will think strategically about all fundraising matters, solicit major gifts, and manage a portfolio of donors and prospects.

The director will lead the Board of Directors, Executive Team, and staff around all fundraising related activities.

The ideal candidate will be a highly energetic, experienced fundraising professional with a proven track record in soliciting five and six figure gifts from individual donors.

The position is based in Manhattan and will be a member of Mechon Hadar’s senior staff, supervised by the Executive Director.


  • Identify, cultivate and solicit major gift donors

  • Create and implement targeted solicitation strategies designed to increase the donor base and close gifts enabling Mechon Hadar to double annual giving in the next 3-4 years.

  • Prepare an annual development plan, including short and long-term objectives, fundraising projections and implementing fundraising programs (including major gifts and annual campaigns) and action strategies

  • Plan and direct special fundraising events

  • Motivate, engage, and train professional staff and lay leadership to be effective fundraisers for the organization

  • Manage the Board of Directors and Board committees

  • Supervise and manage development staff

  • Oversee record-keeping system of all pledges and gifts

  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned


  • Minimum of five years fundraising experience or related field that demonstrates a track record of success, including background in closing 5 and 6-figure gifts.

  • Strong commitment and understanding of Mechon Hadar’s mission and goals; passion for Jewish learning

  • Familiarity with the New York Jewish philanthropic landscape

  • Results-oriented and driven with an entrepreneurial approach to fundraising and problem-solving

  • Exceptional writing skills

  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and deal with unexpected situations in an effective and efficient manner

  • Superior professional presentation and interpersonal skills

  • Highly organized, ability to balance big-picture thinking with attention to detail

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings
