Job Description

Adas Israel Congregation, a 1,500-family Conservative synagogue in the heart of our nation’s capital with a historic past and an exciting future, seeks an Executive Director to work with our dynamic clergy, professional staff and educational staff, as well as our committed and engaged lay leadership to steer the institution through a period of growth and renewal.

The Executive Director has four main functions:

— S/he is the chief operating officer of the synagogue, responsible for all management, administrative, programmatic and support operations to advance a strategic vision — defined by the senior rabbi and endorsed by the lay leadership — of an active, engaged and progressive institution committed to fulfilling the religious, education, spiritual and social needs of its congregants and the broader Washington-area Jewish community. This includes not only such traditional functions as overseeing synagogue maintenance and security, but it also includes completing, and taking full advantage of, a multi-million dollar renovation of the synagogue’s physical plant – our “Vision of Renewal” project – that is providing Adas Israel with inspiring sacred space, engaging learning space, and inviting meeting space appropriate for a vibrant, active, forward-thinking congregation.

— S/he is the chief engagement officer of the synagogue, responsible for providing the critical personal link — the human touch — between congregants and clergy, between membership and lay leadership, between new, young or prospective members and long-time congregants, and between the many diverse communities that come together under the synagogue’s roof and enrich the life of the congregation.

— S/he is the chief development officer of the synagogue, responsible for building the near- and long-term financial health of the institution by deepening the commitment of its existing congregants, devising and implementing new strategies to expand membership, and developing new and innovative sources of financial support.

— S/he is the chief financial officer of the synagogue, responsible for overseeing all financial operations, including accounting and bookkeeping, budgeting, investment oversight, and the annual audit, and ensuring that the synagogue’s financial systems operate with the maximum efficiency, transparency, and integrity.

To fulfill these responsibilities, the ED leads a motivated team of synagogue professional staff, is responsible for all areas of personnel management (including hiring, promotion, terminations, benefits and related matters) for all staff operating under his/her supervision, and ensures the full, fair and accurate implementation of synagogue personnel policies.

In this effort, the ED will, like the senior rabbi, report to the President of the Congregation and through the President to the Board of Directors. Operationally, the ED will works closely with relevant members of the synagogue’s Board of Directors, e.g., the Vice President for Administration, Vice President for Development, Vice President for Education, and Treasurer. More generally, the ED will support the work of the Officers and Board of Directors of the synagogue, providing them with the advice, counsel and tangible assistance to enable them to fulfill their responsibilities to the congregation.

Adas Israel Congregation is committed to building a warm, welcoming community that blends the finest traditions of the past with the excitement and innovation of the future, a model for Conservative Jewry in the 21st century. Working in close partnership with our clergy, staff and lay leadership, our new Executive Director will play a vital role in this effort.
Adas Israel welcomes inquires from candidates with a broad range of professional backgrounds. While previous experience as synagogue executive director or administrator is helpful, Adas Israel is looking for outstanding candidates who would consider themselves appropriate for serving as the CEO or COO of a dynamic, multi-generational, community-focused, service-oriented Jewish NGO – because that is the way Adas Israel thinks of itself.
