Location: Ohev Sholom – The National Synagogue, Washington, D.C.


Salary: Commensurate with experience

Summary: Ohev Sholom – The National Synagogue, a vibrant 350-family Modern Orthodox congregation in Washington, DC, is seeking an Executive Director to oversee the operations of the synagogue and to ensure that the organization runs efficiently. The Executive Director will work closely with the synagogue’s clergy and staff and report to the Board of Directors.  We seek an Executive Director with a demonstrated record of successful organizational management, programming expertise, and staff supervision in a collaborative organization. The ideal candidate will possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, flexibility and creativity, a positive outlook and motivation to ensure that our congregation continues to thrive and to serve the needs of our membership.

Organization: Ohev Sholom – The National Synagogue (“Ohev”) is a modern-Orthodox synagogue unlike any other in the country. Ohev serves a dynamic, diverse, and growing community committed to Torah, good deeds, tolerance, and openness. Ohev runs programs including daily minyanim, a summer camp, year-round children’s programming, Torah study groups, holiday celebrations, life-cycle events, service programs, and guest lectures. Ohev also conducts Jewish programming across the D.C. metropolitan area including Congressional celebrations and study-groups, weekly Torah study in downtown D.C., and holiday celebrations across the city – to name only a few. Located in D.C.’s thriving Shepherd Park neighborhood, Ohev embraces Judaism and tradition while engaging the modern world. Ohev has experienced substantial growth in the last decade.


The major areas of responsibility for the Executive Director position include:

Facilities Management and Security

  • Ensure that property and equipment are maintained in excellent condition
  • Manage facilities calendar and building reservations for synagogue programs and events
  • Coordinate and supervise synagogue security personnel and protocols

Administration and Oversight

  • Supervise clerical and maintenance staff
  • Manage day-to-day operations and act as primary contact for most outside vendors
  • Manage Insurance/Liability/Legal issues as it relates to synagogue programming and activities
  • Maintain policies and procedural manual and employee handbook
  • Maintain and update synagogue records
  • File necessary reports and documents with government agencies

Community Relations and Communication

  • Promote accurate and positive image of the synagogue to staff, congregants, and community at large
  • Oversee and create communications to synagogue membership
  • Support membership retention
  • Maintain and manage membership records

Finance and Budget

  • Understand and anticipate the congregation’s financial needs
  • Work with synagogue staff and board to devise and implement long-term planning and financial strategies
  • Oversee synagogue expenditures and budgets


  • Full-time; flexibility is important as hours can vary (including board meetings and special events)
  • Required attendance at board meetings


  • Excellent organization and management skills

  • Ability to work well with various synagogue constituencies, including board of directors, staff, clergy, youth, congregants (adult and children), and visitors
